Every Mother’s Day as CEO, I have written a blog honoring Mothers. This year is no different! They are the superheroes of this movement of Girls; we are indeed largely a movement of mothers leading their daughters. For sure, there are men like myself who are allies of the movement, and we are committed to helping Juliette’s vision advance. Indeed, we are honored to be accepted by so many women to help grow this 1912 Juliette Gordon Low dream. Since 1912, Juliette has inspired mothers to step forward to be volunteers to give a safe place for their daughters to learn courage, confidence, and character. So this Mother’s Day 2025, let me proclaim that we are so appreciative of all the Mothers out there for all that they do to build the best Girl leadership experience on the face of this green and blue earth.
Having just finished one of our most difficult cookie sales, we as a Council moved forward with grace and optimism because our moms gave us so much hope and heart. Moms, after all, are our superheroes learned over nine months, years, and decades. This year, our moms gave us adaptability. Moms are so adaptable because the exuberance of youth creates surprises around every turn. Stories abound of children coming out of a room and having the mom say “You did want?!?!” Moms always recover from the situation and bring balance back to the situation, whatever it may be. As consumers slowed their spending this year, our moms looked for new ways to help their daughters achieve their goals. More booths, new places to sell, and resend electronic emails. Our moms believed in their Girl Scout goals and helped them succeed!
Moms are so innovative. How many moms throughout history did not have the economic means to make their daughter’s birthday special? Yet, in the end, whether it be a special meal, a hug, or a nice arts and craft, a mom’s love gave their daughter a happy day to celebrate their birthday. This 2025 cookie sale, despite the difficult environment, our Girl Scouts tied our record for gift of caring. Our moms were innovative and helped their Girl Scouts succeed. Our Girl Scouts followed their lead and asked for donations at every turn, had compelling signs, and made a difference. From the get-go, our cookie sales trended down versus last year because of reduced consumer spending. But our troop-to-troop sales stayed in line with last year and by the end, exceeded our charity donations by 3,000 boxes, up 6%! Our moms and Girls were so innovative.
A final trait our moms give this world is resilience. Moms are tough, something they learn every day, being a mom dealing with sickness, disappointment, and life’s challenges. Leaders give hope, right? Moms give hope every day to their daughters. That builds stamina and resilience. This year, more than ever, our Girl Scouts and their moms were tough and resilient, helping us get to 1.83M boxes sold. Our mothers are tough, and they never give up.
So, on Mother’s Day 2025, I am reminded how fortunate we are to have so many incredible mothers who are making us a special movement. From Bonner’s Ferry to Zilah, from Omak to Clarkston. From Silver Valley to Cle Elum, our mothers make this movement go. I close this blog by dedicating it to my mom, Barbara. In her 80s, she raised three sons with love and gave me the compassion and empathy to be an ally of this incredible movement. Adaptability, innovation, and resilience—our mothers are superheroes. Why do we honor all our mothers this weekend? Juliette was not a mom, but she had one, and she learned so much from her mom, not the least of which was vision. To each mom in our Council—there is no doubt you are the reason we have the Council of Distinction we have today. We celebrate you, moms of Distinction. You make our world a better place! Enjoy your day—every day we celebrate YOU! “The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.” —Henry Ward Beecher
